Pictures on Flikr

I have made a Flikr account to put up any pictures that i take for my media. So far i have !6 good pictures up but i am hoping to add more pictures to to when i take some of myself and also other people so i have more i a choice to choose from more my magazine. I will also have a larger choice for my contents and double page spread. I will be able to use a lot of the photos and make a lot of drafts using different pictures to see which on looks better. The link to my Flikr account is the link below:

Draft 1 for Music Magazine

This is a draft of a the music magazine i will be creating. I have used the Masthead that i will be using for my final Music magazine, I have added a white background behind it so that it is more visible, this is so that all that people will see the logo on the shelves more clearly. I have made good use of a transparent white rectangle so that the main headline is more visible on my models coat. I have also made up a few possible coverlines that i could use for my magazine, this will be easier for me because i will not have to think of them when i am making my final magazine.

Best pictures from photoshoots

These are a few of the photos i did for my photo shoot, i told everyone what to do so it made them look like they were part of a group or a single artist. For the pictures outside, i made good use of where the sunlight was so the light would be going onto the face of Harry. For the photos of the group inside, i used flash from the camera, this made each person more visible so it would be suitable for my magazine.

The Rule of Thirds

The Rule of Thirds
Definition: In the rule of thirds, photos are divided into thirds with two imaginary lines vertically and two lines horizontally making three columns, three rows, and nine sections in the images. Important compositional elements and leading lines are placed on or near the imaginary lines and where the lines intersect.

When taking a photograph with the rule of thirds in mind, it’s always best to compose the photograph in the camera. This is so that you can avoid cropping later to retain as much of the image as possible and avoid reducing the quality of the photographs.

Here is an example of a rule of thirds portrait. As you can see, the eyes are lined up with the upper horizontal line and each eye is where the upper horizontal line intersects with a vertical line. This could help with the visual syntax of my magazine cover because everything is very coordinated well and could be well thought about.

Moodboard

I have created a mood board to show what kind of features i will be using throughout my magazine on my front cover, contents page, double page spread and also a  full page advert. The pictures are showing the sorts of things I would like to be on them. I have different pictures which i would like my photos to be like. I have also included things that i could use to be the sponsor to my magazine which would make the reputation of both my company and the other company.

Front cover layout plan

These are some layout plans for my music magazine front cover I will be producing. I have given myself a few different options to what i may or may not use. Each one of my plans have a picture in the back ground of it, this is because it will be the main focus to the front cover. All of the plans also have some kind of heading and cover lines. i want people to know what the main articles in the magazine will be, so by using the headings and cover lines will tell the readers what will be inside. Having a banner can also tell people what will be inside, but they can also be used to advertise something of relevance.  Music magazines usually use them to advertise some form of event, so this is what i will do.

Photography plan

For my photo shoot, I will be taking pictures of a male boy band and also a single male artist. To ensure I keep my readers happy, I have had to stick as much as I can to my questionnaire results. For both the boy band and the male artist, I will take some photos of them in the drama studio and use the lighting, and will make sure it is a plain background so all the focus is on the people in the photo. For the boy band,  the main singer will be closer to the camera so that are the main focus of the photo, the interview that will be done with them will also be more focused on the main singer of the group. I will try both black and white and also just a normal coloured edit on the pictures and see which of the two suits my magazine the best. I will also take some photos of them outside; this will give me a bigger option of photos to choice from. I will need more photos to use on my double page spread as this will be where the interview will be. Making the models of my photography looking away from my camera will be what I will be doing the most, also making them have a laugh and taking pictures of them laughing will be crucial. This will show that they can all have a joke but also take their job seriously. My magazine is mainly aimed at teenagers, so I will make them wear what normal teenagers wear, just casual clothes, the kind of clothes they would wear to go out and about. This will make the audience seem like they aren’t any different to them.

Best Music magazine mastheads

These are my best mast head ideas, i will more than likely use one of these designs for my final music magazine. I have given myself a few different options so when I start making my magazine, i can see what masthead suits the page better.

Draft music magazine mastheads 1

Questionnaire Results

The majority of the people who answered my questionnaire where between the ages of 15-24. If I want my magazine to be successful, I will have to plan my magazine around what the people of these ages like. All the answers that have been answered in my questionnaire was from this age group, this tells me what all of these people like and what they would like to be in the magazine. A few people from 25-36 have also filled out my magazine so I will have to keep in mind that not all people from 15-24 would read the magazine. I will have to put something’s in that will suit their age group to ensure I have a different age range of readers.

16 of the people that filled out my questionnaire were male, my magazine will be more mail based. To ensure that my magazine is more masculine, I will use darker colours. I will also want female readers, 9 females filled out my questionnaire. To ensure that females also buy and read my magazine, I will make sure that there are things in my magazine that will make females interested, for example boy bands or female preferred artists.

Most of the people I asked were students, this is why there were so many 15-24 year olds. Students like up to date music and like to hear and know of the latest bands as soon as possible, my magazine will promote a new band that do a range of different genres to ensure that all my audience is happy.

13 of the 25 people said that they prefer R&B and 9 said that they prefer Rap; these 2 genres will be the main focus of my magazine. I will use well known artists but also use my photos from my photo shoot that I will do. I plan to do photos of a new band and then of a new solo artist that will suit people students between the ages of 15-24.

Male artists were the most preferred gender of artist so I will base my magazine on male artists. Females artists were also very much preferred so on my contents I will have a picture of a female that I will take in my photo shoot along with some sort of boy band.

The majority of the people have chosen a TV advert, sport advert was second. So for my full page advert will be some sort of TV sports advert that is advertising what is going to be on the TV or some sort of new program.

Brand Values of Q and NME magazines and also my music magazine

Q magazine

Q magazine always has there logo at the top right of the page, this makes the magazine stand out from all the others as it is the brightest on out of all the music magazines. They have also gone for a neat but with a lot of information on the front cover, this tells the readers what the main stories are in the magazine without them having to look at the contents page. They always have a large picture of an artist as the background, this shows us that the main person or group in the magazine is going to be able them. Q specialize in interviews so they try to do as many as possible to make the readers interested and to attract the same readers every issues. All Q magazines look very professional compared to other magazines such as NME or VIBE

NME

NME magazine have neat but they also have scattered and messy look. They tend to go more for a scattered look as there target audience is more for teenagers and teenagers tend to be more messy and don't really care how things look, as long as they have the information inside that they are looking for. They also tend to go for the more well known singers or bands because they think that they will be more well known with the target audience and it will be a better chance that they audience will buy or read the magazine. NME don't have a logo that stands out compared to Q magazine, this doesn't stop them selling their magazines thought, NME have a good reputation with the younger generations and tends to get passed round more because teenagers gossip more than adults do.

My music magazine

If when i get my questionnaires back and the target audience are 15-24, i will make my magazine with well known, young music artists. It will also depend on the amount of people from different sex's, different gender listen and like different genres and different artists. Also depending on what age you changes what you like a magazine to look like, so if my audience turns out to be for 15-24 year old people, it will be more messy. My logo will be large so people can see it from a distance and will recognize my music magazine.

Brand identity and values for my music magazine

Definition: How all the elements of the visual appearance of the product contribute to the overall product.

Brand identity is extremely important to make a magazine successful. Brand identity is all the different type of features put together to form a magazine. Companies want people to remember their logos so try and make them stand out to people, they want customers to see it and think that they are a good shop or company that sells good items. If people thing this, this means they would have developed a good brand identity. To get more sales on a product, it needs to have a good name for themselves.

Once I get my questionnaire back, I will be able to develop a simple plan of who my magazine will be aimed at through music and fashion, I will also know what sort of price my magazine will be. My main genre of music my magazine will be aimed at will be R&B as there aren't many magazines that focus on R&B. It will also have general music gossip for other genre of music because this could bring me more customers from different people. I will make my magazine stand out and make sure it is very unique, this will make people see my magazine and want to buy it. The logo will also be bold so it stand out from other magazines so when people see it they will know its my music magazine and that it has a good reputaion.

Target Audience Research and detailed analysis of Q magazine

The Genre of music i will be using for my music magazine is R&B, this is a popular type of music with very well know artists such as Rihanna, JLS and Rita Ora. My magazine will be for a mainstream audience as the majority of people in the UK listen to R&B. My magazine is going to be similar to other music magazines but will have more interesting stories and more well known artists for teenagers and also adults. It will have more interviews and more music celebratory news, it will also help small band or singers get more well known by promoting their music. My magazine will be more aimed towards girls or women because they tend to listen more to R&B, having young boys bands such as One Direction would bring more young girls to buy or to read the magazine. There would also be females on or in the magazine such as Nicole Scherzinger because girls and women idolize her, and like the way she dresses so they tend to buy similar clothing to her. People look up to her and want to be her so they try and become a singer because they like they way her life style is and the way she lives with all the money and big house. R&B artists tend to dress casually but they also dress to go with the fashion.

Different photos from my photo shoot

These are a few of my photos i took for my magazine, i planned each one in case i needed to use them for my magazine. i made sure it was the right background and the right time of day to make sure they were perfect.

Planned photo shoot

For my front cover, i plan to take a picture of a student smiling with a plain background, this will get the audience to look at the person and not anything in the background. This will help with the visual syntax as they will be able to look at the persons eyes and nothing will be distracting them.
for my contents page i will have two pictures, one main one and then one smaller one. For the large one, i shall take it of four students on a sunny day with the blue sky behind them who have been a a trip with school. This will make it look like they are in another country, this will hopefully make the students want to go. The other picture will be of a student smiling with no background again, this will make the student look happy because they are they hardest working student in sixth form.

Final contents page

This is my final contents page. i have used the same house style so it doesn't look different to any other page int eh magazine, so it fits in. i have also used heading so it is easy for people to find there way around it, it is also easy for people to find what they are looking for. My page has a structures layout, i used guidelines to make sure everything is inline and looks as neat as possible. i have made sure that the picture actually have something to do with the magazine so that they fit in with all the text.

final front cover for my Plantsbrook magazine front cover

I believe that my magazine looks very professional. I have made a Masthead by using fireworks and used different skills such as rotating and flipping of letters to make it as good as I can. I have also used a stroke around the ‘B’ in the masthead; I have done this to make it stand out so it catches people’s eyes. I have used a camera to take a picture of people to use as my background or for on my contents page, I have had to mask it down so other conventions, such as cover lines or headings, don’t go over the face as this is one of the most important things on the magazine cover. I also have a headline which is a large font but not as big as the masthead because the masthead is the most important thing on the magazine, people need to recognize the brand. People’s eyes get drawn to the headline because of the size of it. I also have cover lines  down the left side of the page; this is the last thing that the reader sees so it is one of the smallest fonts on the cover. I have also used pull quotes so it makes people interested and may persuade people to buy it or want it, this could also be known as a lure as it lures people in to buy the magazine or to read on. I have also made sure that all the text fits in with the picture colour so it looks right and not out of place.

Layout of contents page

Conventions of a contents page

There are many things that are needed to make a successful contents page. They are:

  • An image- the image needs to have something to do with whats going to be in the magazine and also must be interesting for the reader to look at.
  • Page numbers- the size, boldness, colour, font and italic are very important to catch the eye of the reader. The numbers are not always on chronological order, this is because they are mostly put into different sections.
  • House style- the house style must be the same as it wont look right if it isn't the same as the front cover or even the whole magazine.
  • Columns- the page numbers and information are usually in columns as it looks neat and easy to find.
  • Structural layout- grids and guidelines are used to make everything on the page look organised.
  • Date and issue number- the date is put on the show the date that it is published and the issue number is the issue of the magazine.
There is always 'Contents' written at the top to make sure customers know it is the contents page. Under the page numbers, there are sometimes captions underneath which explain what is going to be on the pages.

magazine mastheads

These are my my Mastheads  that i have created on fireworks. I shall use one of these for my magazine cover, and maybe use some for any drafts i create for thr cover.

conventions and audience

The conventions of a magazine cover for plantsbrook school would be a masthead which stands out and has a colour scheme that matches the colour of plantsbrook school which would be black and red, this is also known as a ‘house style’. There will also be headlines so the pupils’ teachers or parents know what is inside, this is important to a magazine as this is what  people see and may make them buy it. Coverlines are very similar to headlines but aren’t as big in font, but these are also very important as these let people know what is inside. Pull quotes or a lure quote could be important aswell so people have an idea of what someone has said maybe in an interview. Pictures are important aswell because this identifies who is going to be inside the magazine. A visual syntax is very important because this make the reader follow a course around the front cover.
The audience of the magazine is for pupils of the school, teachers and maybe even parents. They will be able to keep up with the weekly gossip in the school and will be able to find out important dates.

Many things could be included in the magazine. An interview with a member of staff could be included inside. A page with important dates could be put on, a page with exam results, a page with and off stead report saying how good the school is. A list of problems with certain students if they have been naughty, this could be used as a punishment to the students if they have done something.
